Introductions:

Co-Chair Elizabeth Wasserman, NPS, welcomed members and visitors and reviewed the agenda. Members and visitors introduced themselves and provided brief descriptions of their organizations, affiliations, and associated current events. Prior to the meeting, participants were encouraged to bring program materials, brochures, newsletters, etc. to share with the group. (See attached roster for participants.)

Scheduled guest(s) presentation:

Alan Parks, representing the City of Homer Global Warming Task Force, provided the group with a program description and an update on outreach efforts. Kyra Wagner, Sustainable Homer, provided additional information to the group about Sustainable Homer and related activities and efforts

New Chairperson discussion:

Beth Trowbridge and Bree Murphy, both CACS, volunteered to be the new Chairpersons. The group agreed to rotate the chairmanship between partners on an annual basis. Terry Thompson, KBRR, will recreate the partner banner once the core partners have been identified again.

KBEEA collaboration updates, opportunities and requests:

Terry asked the group to participate in a Day of Science to be held on the EPA research vessel Bold should EPA decide to bring the ship to Homer. Terry has already communicated KBEEA interest in hosting the event to EPA, and the group will be informed of EPA decision in January.

Lois Bettini, Pratt Museum, and Kris Holdereid, NOAA, (by email correspondence) gave an update on the KBEEA website funding. The group will investigate further; Terry’s staff will continue to maintain the website.

Marianne Aplin, AMNWR-FWS updated the group on upcoming Shorebird Festival dates (May 8-11th, 2008) and activities on the Spit and reminded the group about the upcoming low tide series (May 5-9th,2008) and school group concentrated visits. Elizabeth said she will investigate current tide pool etiquette education at local schools and youth organizations.

Carmen Field, KBRR and Marianne will host “Tide Guide” training Wednesday, April 9th, 2008. The volunteer training will take place at I&O, 9:30 to 12:30. Elizabeth will help; others interested should contact Carmen.

Group discussion about Sea Week was initiated by Glenn Seaman, NOAA/NCCOS, and lead by Bree. The group agreed to explore effective ways to participate in the future.

Elizabeth and Carmen (and Catie Bursch, KBRR, in absentia – or Bolivia, as the case may be) will work together to organize the 7th Grade Day of Science, and will provide the group with updates as appropriate.

Carmen asked for collaborators for upcoming Discovery Labs; group members should contact Carmen if interested. She also discussed BioBliz, 2008, asking for interested participants to contact her regarding the September 27th event. Carmen advised the group of the upcoming National Ocean Science Bowl in April, 2008; contact her for more information.

Terry shared the most recent ADF&G kelp harvesting regulations and brochure with the group; the brochure should also be online.

Lisa Matlock, AMNWR-FWS, will host the Earth Day activities organizing meeting for KBEEA participants on Friday, January 8th at I&O, 1-3pm. Contact Lisa for additional information.

Ryjil Christianson, Pratt Museum, announced the next art-science collaborative topic: Concerning Climate Change, scheduled for exhibit in April, 2008. She asked the group for January – March, 2008 workshop collaborations and speaker ideas. Contact Ryjil for additional information.

The next KBEEA General meeting is February 8th, 2008 at I&O, 9:00am-2:00pm. Please send your agenda items to Bree and Beth in advance of the meeting. 10-5-07 KBEEA Meeting Participants
