1)      Introductions

2)      “Spring Break in the Islands” March 12-20 (Rebekah)

  1. Nature hike – making natural instruments
  2. Marimba band – Milo Matthews will work with kids and their natural instruments
  3. Idita-Nature – per Carmen, Rebekah will work with her on
  4. Wynn nature hike – Beth offered normal Wednesday snowshoe hike, will work with Rebekah to finalize
  5. Marimba – alternate leader, Ingvall Gottu (sp?)

3)      Earth Day Event April 21 & 22 (Carmen)

  1. Evening of April 21 from 6:30-8 p.m., will show “Play Again” at Islands and Ocean (Lisa)
  2. Morning – Carmen will lead “Growing Nature Clubs” for attendees at Islands and Ocean
  3. Afternoon – looking for volunteers to lead hikes around town and/or be available at various trailheads for families, email or call Carmen to volunteer
  4. Questions about water as a theme to connect with the national theme were offered, with the KBRR discovery lab that month possibly connecting with a field trip in the Homer watershed
  5. This April 22 event is also a “Let’s G.O.” event with more info about this national program passed out by Carmen at the meeting

4)      Other Spring 2011 Events

  1. Ice fishing event at Encewlewski (sp?) Lake on Feb. 26 – see Carmen for more details
  2. BOW family fly fishing event on May 14 – see Jessica Ryan at the KBRR for more details
  3. Family Camps at Ageya by the Wynn March 12-13 and April 2-3, see Beth for more details
  4. Farm tours with Mossy Kilcher March 5 – Carmen for more details
  5. April KBRR discovery lab to include a Coastwalk field trip at beach area TBD by Carmen and Patrick

5)      Homer Foundation Grant

  1. No funding for past homerfieldtrips.com website for Pratt (about a $3,000 bill) so need to help Pratt with fundraiser - one suggestion was Mud, Music, and Booze or some version of an adults-only Mud Games – Carmen will gingerly approach the pony club about this one
  2. Funding for new website migration was granted - Invoice is needed ASAP from David – other paperwork to be completed as we complete the grant such as thank you’s to donators, etc.
  3. *Meeting of core users scheduled for February 28, 2011 from 9:30-11:30 at Islands and Ocean to look at JOOMLA templates and make decisions about which pages will migrate.
  4. Later there will be scheduled a training on the new website maintenance and updates will need to be done, also KBEEA members will need to decide which public pages will be the responsibility of which individuals

6)      Summer 2011 Events

  1. Ageya Camp – Kevin presented about the history and current conception of Ageya Camp a year-round retreat and summer Outbound program – KBEEA especially interested in Ageya as possible spring school rental for schools visiting from out of town – Ageya is always interested in Homer-area speakers from KBEEA who want to pass on career and other info to campers
  2. Youth Conservation Corps program at the Refuge – looking for good candidates 15-19 years of age. Pratt is waiting to hear whether they will have YCC interns through Lake Clark NP as well
  3. Green crab and phytoplankton (i.e. “harmful algal bloom”) monitors need by Catie – contact her if you or volunteers from your organization are interested
  4. CACS has invested in a bus to carry cruise ship passengers on a tour of the Wynn, and will be expanding summer teen camps to include climate change and will be expanding onboard oceanography for families

7) Upcoming 2011-2012 Events

  1. National Ocean Sciences Bowl – Homer Team (Brenda) – will be co-coached by Brenda, Kris Holderied, and Barbi (sp?) from ADF&G with the KBEEA providing support as needed *First NOSB event after Brenda fields a team will be August 10 mock quiz bowl at Islands and Ocean – more details TBD*
  2. “Wisdomkeeper” Project – outlined by Glenn – looking for boat $$ to get scientists across to Port Graham and Nanwalek for work with communities there by mid-October, 2011 at latest. Is hoping to have an education program that has regular connections to these communities to be part- Carmen and Catie shows KBRR support – after issues of needs in the villages are resolved
  3. KBay Science Conference March 2012 (Beth) – CACS (Beth or Mike) or KBay Ecosystem Group (Mega McCarthy) need theme by late spring/summer 2011. Ideas tossed around included People in the Environment and other related connections between social and natural sciences in the bay
